Sowa-Rigpa, meaning "knowledge of healing" in Bhoti, is an ancient, holistic medical system practiced in the Himalayan regions, Tibet, Mongolia, and surrounding areas for over 2,500 years. It combines Indian Ayurveda principles with Tibetan knowledge, focusing on balancing the body, mind, and energy through diet, lifestyle, and herbal medicines.
Key Aspects of Sowa-Rigpa:
- Origin: Propounded by Lord Buddha, it is a living tradition often called the "Amchi system of medicine".
- Principles: Based on Jung-wa-nga (five elements) and Nyespa gsum (three humors: rLung, mKhrispa, Badkan), which are similar to Ayurveda's tridosha.
- Diagnostics:Uses visual observation (tongue/urine), touch (pulse reading), and questioning.
- Treatments: Utilizes herbal remedies, minerals, animal products, and holistic therapies like moxibustion, massage, and diet modifications.
- Practice Areas: Common in Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, and West Bengal in India, as well as Bhutan, Nepal, and Tibet.
The Ministry of Ayush in India recognizes this system, and the National Institute of Sowa-Rigpa in Ladakh is dedicated to its research and education
